Walking with Caremark - 2000 Mile Step Challenge · 25 October 2021

In May 2019 a group of parents decided to volunteer themselves to form a new Autistic group called Puzzles. Our purpose is to provide help to families supporting adults with Autism, people with a disability and those with a long-term health condition. We aim to bring families together to share experiences, meet others and spend social time with others who understand them. We want our members to be safe and feel comfortable. Based in Medway we deliver a range of weekly social, recreational and learning activities across Kent to adults with Autism, their family members and their friends to improve their physical health and mental well-being. It is a joy to watch them interact with each other, slowly at first but once they feel safe and welcomed they gradually open up and then you see all the happiness that they find in being outside doing activities and being able to have friendships, while being understood by the helpers and support workers around them. We currently have a membership of around 1200 adults but also provide indirect support to their friends, family members, support workers and carers.

Story

Caremark are always looking for ways to give back to the local community. This year one of the team (Amelia) mentioned Puzzles and the inspiring work they are doing for families and individuals with Autism and other disabilities (Read more below). So we decided as a team that it would be a fantastic cause to support. To fundraise for Puzzles, 22 members of the team will be walking 2000 miles (virtually) across the UK. Not only are we able to fundraise, but we can support the wellbeing of our team and make sure everyone gets their steps in!

Puzzles is run by 30 volunteers who give their time up for
free. Puzzles is open to all ages, from early years to 78 years plus. Puzzles has now become a vital support service in Medway and surrounding towns, which has an impressive membership of over 1500 members. Puzzles provided support to families with Autism during lockdown with food vouchers, sensory equipment, exercise equipment and staying in contact via zoom. In 2021 Puzzles has taken out, helped and supported over 2000 members through a drop in centre, outreach and going out on activities.

This all comes at a hug cost to the charity. Puzzles needs to raise as much money as possible to cover costs and Caremark are hoping with your support we can make this happen.
