Story
Uh oh! I’ve only gone and signed myself up to a half marathon!!!
Right, for those of you that know me (don’t even have to know me well) you’ll realise that I like running about as much as I like fruit cake!! (Not at ALL!) In fact I’m one of those people that says ‘if you see me running you’d better run too as there’s something chasing me!’ I don’t think I
even run after the children if they’re in imminent danger – I just scream
instead of breaking into a trot!! Anyway you get the general gist – it’s not my cup of tea…
So why then, you might ask, have you signed up to do a half marathon?? (‘you nutter’ you might add) and the reason is simple…. As if I haven’t got enough reason to run for this amazing charity myself, one of my dearest friends, Alison, was diagnosed about a year ago with Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Now not only has she undergone all of her treatment (chemo, radiotherapy, surgery etc) and side effects with a massive smile on her beautiful face, she’s also continued to be the most amazing Mum to her gorgeous little girl, doing all the school runs and general Mum duties, finished her degree (!) and to top it off thought she’d better start training to do something to give back…. This is the lady that never takes anything!! She barely asked for help, never felt sorry for herself (unless it was a hormone injection week!!) and is truly an inspiration to us all. She literally is unstoppable! So when she asked me if I wanted to run with her and another great friend Emma, in the half marathon for Cancer Research, what could I say??? (Of course I said 'No' to start with, but she ground me down with emotional blackmail and coercion eventually!!)
So, whether it’s a penny or a pound…. Please give generously
in the knowledge that I’ll be hating every minute of training, have to endure hours of street pounding to power ballads (from Alison’s music collection) and will probably be in pain and/or wetting myself!! But all of this I will do with pride - to do it by her side and for a cause that has helped not only Alison and our little girl, Kaitlin through her treatment and diagnosis, but every one of us who have ever had someone fight against this horrible disease!! Right let’s get on with it…..
