Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Losing a loved one is never easy. The loss of Shirley hit home hard with my husband and I. His mother was a wonderful lady, full of life, fun, active and made the most of every day. Often travelling everywhere by coach trips with her many friends or seeing a matinee at the theatre. She was a wonderful mother and grand mother and the best mother-in-law you could ask for. I remember the first time Jon introduced me to her, I baked a cake to take for tea and she was so impressed she told Jon, I could come again and he should keep me hahhaa.
Sadly Shirley was diagnosed with cancer and given a short time to live. She was so accepting of her condition, she made no fuss, wanted no special treatment. She just wanted to carry on as normal for the time she had left. She lived long enough to see Jon & I married in 2010 and she looked every bit the proud mum when Jon said I do. We treasure those moments and the happiness in her face. Sadly she passed away just weeks after.
Shirley went into the Rowans when her illness became life limiting. The service they gave and care not to just mum, but also to the family, was just amazing. She had dignity, comfort and was in beautiful surroundings. Nothing was too much trouble for them to do for her. We remember how on her arrival she commented on how beautiful her room was and she had a view of the pond and the birdies. She even commented on how great it was that she had an en-suite bathroom too! Whilst her stay was short and she passed four days later. The care given in her passing was just wonderful. She looked so peaceful and passed with dignity knowing her family were all with her.
Even though it is four years on, the Rowans continue to offer the bereavement care and the compassion has never stopped. The reason why I have chosen to do the walk for the Hospice is to give back a little of what we received. We could never give any money that would ever equate to the care we have and continue to have from the Rowans but hope this small gesture in the sponsored 12 mile walk may also offer another family the same.
