Alport UK is a patient-led charity dedicated to facilitating a support and information network for all those affected by Alport Syndrome. Our Vision is to ensure that all individuals and families with Alport Syndrome feel empowered to enjoy the best quality of life.

Story

In 1927 my grandfather, Professor Arthur Cecil Alport, identified a rare genetic condition which affects certain families and which, after his death, was named after him.

Alport Syndrome can cause kidney failure, deafness and eye abnormalities, and those who inherit it will probably need a kidney transplant when they are a teenager or in their early twenties.

Because of the family link I have been aware of Alport Syndrome for as long as I can remember, without knowing much about it, but I realize that very few other people have ever heard of it, including in the medical profession.  Because of this I have been trying to find a way to raise awareness of the disease in a way that reflects my grandfather which is why I have set up:   https://versesforalport.com/

I do not have many memories of my grandfather as he lived in South Africa for much of the year when I was a small child, while we lived in the UK, and he died when I was eight years old.  The memories I do have mostly have to do with comic poetry so I am asking people, anyone and everyone, to write amusing little verses on any of a
wide variety of subjects and, hopefully, they will take time to read the
information about Alport Syndrome while having a bit of fun.

Any money received will be used entirely for research.  It will be channelled through AlportUK but the benefits of the research will be international, just as the disease is found in many different countries.
