STORY

Welcome to the JustGiving page for raising funds for a sickle cell centre in  Nigeria by the Rotary Club Stratford.

We are members of the Rotary club of Stratford and we are raising £150,000 for a sickle cell centre in Africa.

Sickle cell disease  is a debilitating disease and  a silent epidemic in sub-saharan Africa. It is characterised by episodes of pain, anaemia and proning individuals to infections. It is most common in those with origins from sub-saharan Africa, but it can affect anyone around the world, if an individual inherits genes for this disease from one's parents.

Early diagnosis is essential to to save lives of children born with this condition as they can start life saving antibiotics and be referred for health care.

50% - 90% of children born with this condition in Nigeria do not live to see their 5th birthday.

We at Rotary want to put a stop to this with your help and many others.

We are raising funds  to establish a sickle cell centre in Holy Rosary Hospital, Owerri, Nigeria. This region does not have a screening  and treatment centre for sickle cell disease.

It creates a huge burden for the individual, family and community, not to talk of the stigma around the disease.

The cost of life long management is most of the time too much for families where most of the individuals in the  population are on less than a dollar a day.

As an inherited condition we also aim to create awareness and screen the young population in the area to provide choice before planning their families. With awareness, counselling and reliable  screening this will surely bring down the number of children born with sickle cell disease each year.

Please give generously to this worthy cause and save lives of children and create choice for those planning their families.

Thank you for supporting this initiative.
