Greyhounds in Need exists to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome retired and abandoned greyhounds in Spain. Its work centres on the native Spanish greyhounds (galgos) used for coursing who commonly live and die in poor conditions.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Greyhounds In Need is a non-profit organisation. It works with refuges, vets and volunteers, mostly in Spain, promoting awareness of the brutal treatment inflicted on the Spanish-bred hunting dogs, the Galgos. When considered no longer of use to the hunter, typically as the hunting season ends in January, the Galgos are disposed of in varied and often barbaric ways. They are thrown onto motorways, starved to death, burned alive, hung from trees by piano wire. It can take a dog a week to die this way.

Several thousand dogs have already been rescued and rehomed across Europe and the rest of the world.

Greyhounds in Need have worked with educational consultants to produce a learning resource, aimed at Spanish children of primary school age, in the hope that the perception people have of the Galgos will gradually change. The response so far has been very positive.

Please take a look at these beautiful, noble creatures on the Greyhounds In Need website www.greyhoundsinneed.co.uk

Many of the Spanish volunteers are met with hostility and often threatened with violence within their own communities so, in comparison, running 20k through Paris doesn't seem so bad...as long as the guy in the Captain Nemo diving suit doesn't overtake me....

Thanks for helping.

"The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but rather, "Can they suffer?"
