“Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy” (The Samaritans)
On 7th September 2021, exactly 10 years since my son Jonathan sadly took his own life, my daughter and I will be walking a distance of 10 miles, with fellow supporters, from our home in Ashtead, up to Jonathan’s memorial bench in Norbury Park. We wanted to do something positive as a way of remembering him.
When someone is in crisis they need help immediately - not in a week, a month or a year’s time. The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and can make a real difference to someone’s state of mind in that moment, just by listening and asking questions in a non-judgmental way, gently encouraging the person in distress to think of solutions other than ending their life.
The Samaritans also support the National Suicide Prevention Strategy.
In England, the National Suicide Prevention Strategy Advisory Group (NSPSAG), hosted by the Department of Health and chaired by Professor Louis Appleby, provides national oversight of the government’s strategy. The group provides advice and support to the Department of Health in the development and implementation of the strategy. The Chief Executive of Samaritans, Catherine Johnstone, is a member of NSPSAG and this advisory role provides an opportunity for Samaritans to bring their expertise to national policy discussions on emerging issues relating to suicide prevention and potential changes to priorities.
Suicide remains the leading cause of death in under 35’s. Please help support the Samaritans so that they can continue their invaluable work. Thank you so much.
