Thank you to everyone for your support xxx
I appreciate jumping off a building isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but since I was one of the first of a handful to push the boundaries in Scuba Diving in Europe in my teens this challenge isn’t completely out of character and personality 😎😎😎.
Sharing quotes from my acceptance email thread from enquiry to acceptance to reassure anyone.
Thank you to the Lord Mayor of London‘s team and The Lord Mayor’s Appeal for exploring this without hesitation and including me in the team in a way that is totally accepting and welcoming.
Thank you for your email and interest in the Abseil Challenge. Delighted to hear that you would like to take part! ...
Thank you for your patience. I now have confirmation from both the abseil company and the health & safety team at Barclays that you can take part in the abseil...
...For the duration of the abseil you may be placed in a bosun's chair and your own wheelchair would be waiting for you on ground level. An instructor would abseil down next to you on a separate rope - this is standard practice for all participants.
Mile End Climbing Wall run abseil events on a regular basis and have previously abseiled wheelchairs users down Broadgate Tower in the City. We have worked with them on our abseil events for several years so I know from first-hand experience that their qualified abseil instructors are professional and very good at putting everyone at ease. You can take as long as you need for the abseil...
...Inclusivity is one of the four pillars of The Lord Mayor’s Appeal strategy so we are keen to do all we can do make the event accessible for everyone and delighted to have you board. ’
Why am I doing this? As part of an inclusive team we aim to raise awareness and funds for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal. This year’s three charities have a mental health focus.
‘...once-in-a-lifetime chance to abseil down one of Canary Wharf’s tallest buildings..
When: 5 July 2019. My slot: 4-6pm
How high is the abseil?
The distance from the roof on level 33 to the ground is 156 metres (512 feet)..’
The three charities that are being supported by the Abseil as part of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal:
75% of mental health issues start in childhood. Place2Be have developed
and will run a transformational mental health programme, helping children who suffer bullying, bereavement, domestic violence, family breakdown, neglect and trauma. This will enable 180 schools in London to provide children with access to mental health and emotional support so they grow up with prospects not problems.
OnSide Youth Zones
OnSide Youth Zones will be a game changer for young Londoners by providing 21st century youth provision; offering them somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to through world class facilities and activities, ranging from sports to music and enterprise to mentoring services. They will help transform lives and communities through five state-of-the-art centres in areas of deprivation tackling mental health, crime and employability prospects. Three of these Youth Zones are opening in 2019.
Every day in the UK, 16 people die by suicide and every six seconds someone calls Samaritans.
Samaritans have launched and are rolling out through companies Wellbeing in the City a ground-breaking online programme, bringing Samaritans expertise into the workplace. It gives employees the skills they need to manage their emotional wellbeing, build resilience, and to listen and support those around them and thereby preventing people reaching crisis point. Together, we will transform lives and potentially save lives too. One life lost is one too many.’
