Radio Lollipop operates at Evelina Children's Hospital and at Great Ormond Street Hospital to provide care, comfort and play to children and their families. Volunteers involve and entertain children during their stay in hospital by combining music from its studio (in an old tube carriage at GOSH and a new glass cube at Evelina) with play activities on the wards. It's serious FUN!

Story

Hi! I'm Carrie-Okie and I'm a Wacky Wednesday Radio Lollipop volunteer at Great Ormond Street Hospital. I've only been at GOSH a few weeks but I've already seen the positive impact Radio Lollipop has on some very poorly kids. Radio Lollipop relies on charitable donations in order to run, so any money you can donate to this very worthy cause is greatly appreciated and will be wisely used.

Anybody who knows me will know that I love all things sweet - chocolate, cake, biscuits, sweets - I love them all!!! Giving them up is not going to be easy, but from Wednesday 13th February until Saturday 30th March not one of these sweet treats will pass my lips. That's 46 days with no sugar and I can tell you now, I intend to celebrate with a great big bar of chocolate on Sunday 31st March!

Here are some more reasons why I'm giving up lollipops for Radio Lollipop...

Radio Lollipop believes in the healing power of play – providing smiles and laughter to children at a time when they need it most. One in four children are admitted to a hospital before reaching age 14. Though some patients are short-stay, many have a recurring need for care and return repeatedly to hospital. Some who are terminally ill spend much of their short lives in hospital. Radio Lollipop gives young patients a voice and a choice during their stay. While they can´t say “no” to taking their medicine or receiving treatment, they can request their favourite songs, win prizes and hear their own voices on the radio. Those activities give youngsters a haven of normality in the hospital day which in other respects is strange, different and often scary.

“Radio Lollipop is not a frilly add-on. It is really helpful clinically – a calm child recovers better. Every member of staff and parent and child think it is fantastic…”

Madeline Ismach - Head of Psychosocial Services, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust, London, UK.
