Zambia IDEALS Project · 31 October 2015 ·
TheZambia IDEALS project formed in 2005 is a unique union between UK Sport and aselection of 6 UK Universities including Loughborough University whocollectively make up the Wallace Group.
Through the provision of sport, The International Development Through Excellence Leaders and Sports (IDEALS) Project aims to focus on the positive impact that sport can have upon impoverished communities, which are often affected by high levels of unemployment, crime, exclusion and many health risks, including HIV and AIDS. By encouraging children and young people to attend sessions, it is hoped that sport can be used as a medium to develop motivation, self-development and self-reliance and help improve the quality of their lives.
The partnership selects & trains 5
student sports coaches based on their commitment and voluntary work at their individual universities who each travel to Lusaka in Zambia to spend the summer working with local volunteers, organising and delivering School PE lessons, community sports programmes and health awareness workshops within the deprived areas of the City’s compounds.
For 2016, the 5 student coaches & member of staff from Loughborough University aim to fundraise £15,000 to support their coaching experience in Zambia and provide equipment to take out to Zambia. This £7000 is the team fundraising that will go alongside the individual fundraising.
Dates of Project 2016: July 2016 – Oct 2016 (Each student volunteers for 6 weeks each, and the staff member for 3 weeks).
