PSPA is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD). We provide information and support for people affected by PSP & CBD whilst funding research into the causes, treatment, and eventually a cure. Together we can stop PSP & CBD in their tracks.
Paddle For Dave
On the second weekend of September 2022 I intend to paddle a Kayak from Brecon for 24hrs ideally I would like to paddle the length of Brecon to Monmouth Canal and back.
My dad, Dave Hope was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) a few years ago. At first it was thought to be Dementia, but the symptoms seemed more physical. Eventually having spoken to someone who’s brother had been diagnosed with PSP and very quickly realising the symptoms were more accurate to dads, it was officially diagnosed with this illness.
PSP has reduced my dads ability to control his body including walking, speaking, swallowing among others and unfortunately due to this illness my dad can no longer kayak or canoe which is his life long passion.
I intend to undertake this challenge to raise awareness of PSP, and the PSP Association, who have been extremely supportive to my parents, especially my mum, Pat, who has been my dads biggest supporter and now carer.
By raising awareness of this disease people will be able to receive an early diagnosis, followed by support and therapy required.
There is no cure for PSP but by carrying out therapy on specific functions it may be slowed.
My dad has spent his life teaching people how to kayak and canoe and was a frequent user and supporter of the canal rivers trust, including giving advice in relation to river access for the river Usk. He would often volunteer his time and knowledge in order to keep the sport available to all.
