Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. This is the second year I will be participating in the charity event cycling 350 miles from London to Paris over the course of 4 days.
I have chosen to raise money for Kidney Research UK as my mum has been suffering from chronic kidney disease for many years. I feel this disease is not in the public eye very often so I am hopeful to not only raise some funds myself but raise awareness to help offer support for those suffering.
Currently there are no cures for kidney disease, only life-extending treatments such as dialysis, where you’re attached to a machine for several hours, three or more days a week. Or a transplant, for which there’s a huge shortage of donor organs. But a transplant only lasts on average between 10-15 years before you need a new one.More than 6,000 people, that’s around 90% of the total organ waiting list, are waiting for a kidney, yet less than 3,000 transplants are carried out each year.
3,000 people a year die while on dialysis and more than 350 people a year die while waiting for a kidney transplant, that’s one person every day. The median waiting time for a kidney on the transplant list is about 1,000 days; it is 180 for a heart transplant.
Of all the money Kidney research UK raise, they invest 77 pence out of every pound directly into their research and awareness work, with 23 pence helping them to raise the next pound to sustain their work into the future.
This means that the money you donate will contribute toward the equipment used in the Renal ward.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
