Story
Since discovering by accident in his school’s annual fun race that he enjoyed distance running Steve has been pounding the streets for much of the last 25 years. During this time he has overcome trainers disintegrating 3 miles from home and having to carry on barefoot, endured snowdrifts, deserts and flooded lanes without having the wit to wear something other than a vest and short shorts and discovered quite how hilly Birmingham is (who knew?) by twice completing the half marathon there.
Unfortunately the body has a way of getting even and so after 2 bouts of surgery and physio sessions without number Steve was told in no uncertain terms by his surgeon that an artificial knee was on the cards if he carried on distance running. Those of you who know Steve well will appreciate that it is hard to get him to take any sort of advice but this was an argument that he even he wasn’t able to ignore, however like the good lawyer he is Steve didn’t take a first offer and eventually the surgeon conceded that one last run probably wouldn’t do too much harm provided there was no training for it. This is that run.
Cath has completed 10k runs and a 10 miler in the past. She loves to run and even though her feet disagree she has gamely signed up to accompany Steve on his last run and carry him over the finish line when his knees give out.
