Swimming the channel- in the pool · 13 March 2014

The death rate of new mothers decreased by 70% in the first hospital where we delivered multi-disciplinary team-training on clinical management of maternity emergencies. We use small-group teaching in skills-stations and scenarios, to improve knowledge and team-work, and teach all maternity staff.

Story

In June 2014 my daughter, Becky, will make her first trip to Malawi to volunteer at the Mangochi orphans education and training school. She will travel with the Scotland Malawi Anaesthesia faculty who will be teaching life-saving maternity skills in the district hospital. To raise funds for the trip, the MOET school and SMAP Becky and I are "swimming the channel"  over an 8 week period and our dear friend Shona Robertson/Little is running the Edinburgh marathon. As you all know I am no athlete, but I am the founder of the Scotland Malawi Anaesthesia Project (SMAP) and a trustee of the charity. We started our swimming challenge on 13.2.14 and are more than halfway across the channel now and really enjoying our morning swims. Shona will run the marathon on 25th May 2014.

We would be really grateful if you  could spare a couple of pounds to sponsor us and raise funds for this amazing school and the Scotland Malawi Anaesthesia Programme (SMAP). You can find more information on the MOET school at www. fomoe.org. We have popped a few photos of our teaching in Salima District hospital and Machinga District hospital into the gallery below, as an example of how we teach and embed the SMAP courses to enable local health care workers to continue to teach their colleagues, long after we have gone.
