We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

I will be running my first half marathon this September in aid of Cancer Research UK. I have chosen to run for this charity as every year I become increasingly aware of the wide-reaching effects of Cancer on my close friends and family. Any donation would be greatly appreciated and will go on to fund the great work that cancer research does (some examples can be seen below). It would mean so much if you could take the time to sponsor me! By doing so you would help to motivate me with my training and would be donating to a very worthy cause.

Cancer research UK spent over £35 million supporting research in Scotland last year. I was inspired to raise money for this charity after reading about some of the following breakthroughs they have funded:

  • Edinburgh scientists have recently developed a new way of

delivering chemotherapy more accurately to tumours.

  • Clinical trials for the breast cancer treatment drug “lapatinib” took place at the Edinbrugh Cancer Research Centre. It has since been globally authorised for the treatment of breast cancer.

  • The Precision-Panc project in Glasgow aims to categorise different types of pancreatic cancer and increase efficacy when matching people with pancreatic cancer to clinical trials.

  • At the Glasgow Drug Discover Unit, scientists are hoping to identify new and repurposed drugs that can be used in the treatment of bowel cancer.

  • A Glasgow team of researchers are working with international collaborators on a novel approach at detecting liver cancer through measuring subtle changes in blood biomarkers.
