Cat's Climb for Cancer

Caitríona Ní Mhuiris is raising money for Royal Free Charity

Cat's Climb for Cancer · 14 June 2021

The Royal Free Charity supports staff and patients across the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. From small acts of kindness to huge investments in research, everything we do changes lives for the better. We support our hospitals to go further, faster – delivering impact locally and globally.

Story

I  thoroughly  enjoy working as an Oncology Nurse, and have been part of an amazing team over the past number of years.

Reflecting over the past year, I'm struck by the resilience and fortitude shown by our patients and my colleagues.  Colleagues, who with little or no preparation, were charged with duties beyond, and in addition to, their usual responsibilities.  I witnessed the isolation and uncertainty that our patients, and their families, confronted along an already difficult journey.

With these moments still vivid in my mind, I feel compelled to acknowledge the bravery and strength of the human spirit that emerged from this challenge. Patients and colleagues alike,  bravely walked alone in and out of hospital settings that were overwhelmed with the virus. I found it both difficult and inspiring  to witness.

I want to raise awareness for all our beautiful patients who courageously, due to restrictions, attended first treatments alone, distressing A&E admissions alone and especially for our patients that took their last breath alone.

I have decided to undertake a personal challenge.  I want to pay tribute to my colleagues as well as the courage shown by our Cancer patients.

In the space of six days, preceding the start of Summer, and the official end of social restrictions, I will endeavour to climb the three highest peaks in the UK solo as a tribute to the patients who walked alone.

Ben Nevis (Scotland),  Snowdon (Wales),  Scafell Pike (England)

As I walk this challenge, I would greatly appreciate your support to raise awareness for our Cancer patients who bravely walked alone, and our team who took care of them.

Funds raised will go towards enhancing well being facilities in the Cancer department that I work in. By providing extra equipment to promote much needed reflection and renewal to hopefully make the next year a little easier for our patients and team.
