Brain Tumour Research is the leading voice of the brain tumour community and focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours. We are campaigning to increase the national investment in research to £35 million per year and funding sustainable Centres of Excellence across the UK.

Story

Brain tumours kill more children and people under 40 than leukaemia or any other cancer

If this statistic shocks you, ask around, chances are someone you know will have been touched by this dreadful disease – are you able to do something about it?

We need people like you and companies to get behind the cause of brain tumours, in the same way that organisations have helped raise substantial funds for research into leukaemia, breast and other cancers – with amazing results. The majority of people diagnosed with these cancers can now expect a cure and to live beyond ten years from diagnosis.

Only 14% of people diagnosed with brain cancer live longer than five years!

This is because brain tumour research is woefully under-funded when compared to other cancers…

And has been for over twenty years! To find a cure for brain tumours will take years of research. Research costs money. A centre of excellence focusing on a three year programme of brain tumour research will need £1million per annum. Put simply, over 365 days in a year that’s £2,740 per day.

Starting with the University of Portsmouth we intend to establish regional centres of excellence, dedicated to laboratory-based brain tumour research.  These centres will collaborate with clinical centres across the region as well as develop collaborations within the UK, throughout Europe and North America.

Building on work already started, Geoff Pilkington, Professor of Cellular and Molecular Neuro-oncology at the University of Portsmouth is recruiting a team of research fellows and postdoctoral researchers with experience of brain tumour research. £1million per year will pay for this team and their support staff.  It will also pay for the materials that they need such as: tissue culture plastic ware, molecular & chemical reagents, serum and assay kits.

Can you or your organisation help us?  Could you ‘Sponsor a Day’ of research?

This campaign has the backing of Sheila Hancock, Actor, Author and Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, whose own grandson was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Will you join us in funding the fight against brain tumours?
