Therapies Unite works to improve the well-being, independence, integration and inclusion of people with disabilities living in Mexico. Our main aim is to support people who need help through the provision of skilled and qualified professional volunteers, dedicated specialist care, training and equipment. We work in deprived areas where poverty and limited medical care are a reality of everyday life. Through our support and professional expertise, we aim to make a long-lasting difference to people's lives while benefiting the wider community. All of the projects we run focus on empowering local people to set up or to develop existing services in order to help the local disabled community. As well as setting up and running our own independent projects, we also support the development of existing rehabilitation services at special needs schools, disabled children’s centres, physiotherapy clinics, elderly care homes and we also work with the local Government to improve access to therapeutic support, education and advice. We are always thinking about how we can make long term changes and through focusing on education and supporting local people we feel we are able to make the differences that are needed to help improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Story

Five of us will be cycling Mizmal ( Ireland end to end) between 4th and 12th May ,2019 a total of approx 500 miles. We have been training hard in all weathers and all terrains ( in Scotland and Wales) to prepare for all the West Coast of Ireland has to throw at us!

I wanted to take this opportunity to raise money to help train a Physiotherapy student from Puerto Vallarta in Mexico at Keele University so they can return to work with charities such as Therapies Unite.

I am doing this in memory of my youngest daughter Catrin who as a Physiotherapy student at Keele went out to Mexico to volunteer for therapies Unite in 2011. She was impressed and touched by the work they were doing with disabled children and their families and in her memory we set up a bursary to fund the Catrin Pickles Physiotherapy Scholarships at Keele University to facilitate 2 students  a year visiting Mexico to work with Therapies Unite to maintain the link.

The prevalence of disability in Mexico is high but there is a significant shortage of physiotherapists. The aim of this project is to award a full scholarship at Keele University for a student from Puerto Vallarta but the total cost of doing this is £44k. Santander bank have very kindly awarded £20k but a further £24k is needed to ensure the training project can commence in September 2019. The trained Physiotherapist will then return to Mexico to work with Therapies Unite and other approved charities for at least 4 years post graduation.

I would greatly appreciate any donations to help support this training project which will ultimately benefit the work of Therapies Unite.
