Royal & Derngate - Challenge 125 · 8 May 2010 ·

Royal & Derngate is the main arts and entertainment venue in Northamptonshire. The complex offers the Derngate hosting visiting productions, the Royal producing our award-winning drama, Underground, the home to a range of projects for families and the local community and the Northampton Filmhouse.

Story

This is a big year for Royal & Derngate as we celebrate 125 years of the Royal auditorium. As we look back over its history, we also look forward to the future with Challenge 125.

The transfer of Spring Storm and Beyond The Horizon from Royal & Derngate to the National Theatre in London is just the latest in a long line of events that connect Northampton with the capital. From the old Roman road that brought history marching through the region to the growth of commence and industry that accompanied the building of the M1, Northampton's central location and proximity has made it a close observer to the unfolding events of history.

As part of Challenge 125, a team of three members of Royal & Derngate staff will be walking the 68 miles from the doors of the National back home to Royal & Derngate. Their journey will take them over towpaths, fields and motorways, and whilst walking they will be re-imagining what was taking place 125 years earlier, when the foundations of the Royal were being laid. This will be taking place from Wednesday 5 May 2010 to Friday 7 May 2010.

Please support us to retrace the footsteps of countless pilgrims, pedlars and pedestrians by sponsoring the walk, and even joining us for the last 3 miles of the route. Please contact the box office for more information 01604 624811.

Our big challenge during our anniversary year is to raise £125,000 of funds for our future artistic programme. All of the money raised during the year will go directly back into the work you see on stage, giving us the chance to develop the ambition and range of the produced work that we do here.
