Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In May I'm planning to complete a 100mile ride on Saturday and run a half marathon on Sunday. Please support!
Some time ago I was leaving work and heading home on my bike as I did everyday, when typically my lights ran out. Opting not to ride through Cardiff's main roads in the dark, I chose to cut through my local park - a route I took every morning.
Crossing the bridge, I was approached by three young people. Thinking nothing of it, I sped up. What happened next took some time to forget.
The youngsters were sentenced in court where they simply made two finger salutes at the judge.
Having moved back to Cardiff recently, I was told they had made it through their jail sentence. I was invited to meet the instigator. Apprehensive about facing the fear I've long buried away, the decision plagued me for a while. Today, I shook his hand.
He has committed many crimes since, some violent, others not. He was arrogant, disrespectful and full of attitude. Then I asked him whether he played sport. He started talking like a human being.
There were barriers to break down here. Unnverving as it was, the meeting taught me one thing - these kids need help. They're not cowards. They have no moral guidance, are seldom respected by their own parents and shown no sense of security or ambition.
Smoking cannabis the night they saw me was their only way to pass time. Inside, he is just a normal kid. He is good at maths. He can pull apart just about anything and fix it within minutes. He's good at judo and pretty quick on the track. But without anything or anyone to channel what he's good at he is a monster. His school simply gave up.
The Trust give kids at risk of involvement in crime & anti-social behaviour something back, helps bring some humanity in their lives - genuinely. My target of £150 can help send them on coaching qualifications or activities, make friends, get into sport, realise their talents, find a way out, a way forward. If anything, it diverts them from crime and anti-social behaviour. Soccer clubs, school trips, activities, you name it, the Trust does it!
When something like this happens, as it does to many people in much more severe ways, it's easy to mistrust everyone. In the days following, a local bike shop, The Bike Shed in Canton, came forward and gave me a brand new bike totally free, to get me back riding again. I didn't own a car so it was a real lifeline at the time. I learned there are still good people out there.
I visit the shop when I can, but I wanted to do more. I thought about putting money into victim support for other people on the receiving end, but it's really the kids who need our support.
