Story
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Anyone who knows me knows I am NOT A RUNNER. But I will be running 161km, averaging 5.7km a day, in August for a very special charity - Raising Futures Kenya. This overall distance is between their two local offices is Nairobi and Kitui. 5.7km is also the average distance that young girls walk to fetch water in Kenya.
For 20 years Raising Futures Kenya have worked alongside vulnerable children, young people and families to support them to break the cycle of poverty and secure rewarding futures.
I am completing my dissertation research in collaboration with RFK, focusing on young girls access to education in the locations they support. Through collaborating with RFK I have spoken with many young girls who have experienced barriers to accessing an education because of their gender. Many young girls in Kenya are subject to sexual abuse, child labour, and arranged marriages. Raising Futures Kenya empower these young girls to understand the importance of an education and livelihood skills to enable them to be self-sufficient and have less dependence on men. They currently work in three three counties in Kenya providing skilled vocational courses, practical business skills training and well-being support for marginalised communities. However, there is a massive need for them to expand their support to other marginalised communities.
This is where your donation can help!!
Below are some of the ways in which your donation could help these young people:
£6 = Lunch for a student for a whole month so they don’t have to learn whilst hungry
£15 = Care package of a year’s supply of sanitary and hygiene products preventing girls from missing school when on their period, and a session on girl’s health and rights so they know their rights and how to assert them
£22 = A month of a young person’s vocational training course enabling them to gain the skills needed to find employment or start a small business
£30 = A year of counselling and well-being support for a young person who has experienced trauma, depression, grief, stress or anything which could impact their mental health well-being and prevent them from getting the most out of their education
My training starts this month - and I am incredibly unfit!! So, please give as little or as much as you can to make my blood, sweat and tears worthwhile and to show support for such a life changing organisation!! Thank you!!
