Story
On 2nd July I will be running, swimming, climbing, jumping and probably trudging 25 miles from Penzance across to the North Coast of Cornwall and then down to Land’s End during Man vs Coast 2022.
I’ve always wanted to do a marathon, and while this is agonisingly short of the full marathon distance, I’m assured it will be sufficiently tough! I’ve made the decision to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage. Being a UK surfer is a wonderful experience, though not without its challenges. I have been ill after surfing in sewage-filled water all over the UK, from Newquay to Yorkshire. There are regular sewage discharges that affect surfers (let alone marine life), and surfing The Gare in Redcar was both an amazing and terrifying experience with waste from local steelworks and local sewage and litter floating throughout one of the top UK surfing spots. I was warned by a local before heading in, “Don’t swallow the water, whatever you do!”.
Our world is at an increasingly delicate balancing point, and anything we can do to restore wildlife and an environmental status quo is crucial, whether it be providing more bins on beaches, educating children in the importance of clean waters or organising mass beach cleans and funding beach cleaning kits.
I realise this is coming at a time when simply affording to live is becoming harder and harder, and simply ask that you give what you are comfortable to, whether it is the price of a pint, or a tank of petrol! Any donation is gratefully received, and thank you for your time reading this.
