Story
My dad was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer in December 2020 and what followed was a whirlwind of emotions. We found out pretty early on that surgery and chemotherapy weren't an option due to his already ill health. Radiotherapy was his only option, and he started treatment the following March. For a while the prognosis looked promising, with the tumour shrinking; however he received the devastating news that the treatment hadn't worked as well as they'd hoped. In September 2021 we found out that the cancer was terminal.
Dad wanted to pass away in his own home, where he was most comfortable, and on the 1st January 2022 with my mam by his side; he did. In the background were the most wonderful team of Marie Curie nurses (amongst others), who stayed nights with my mam and dad on multiple occasions. There was a nurse present when dad passed away, and she was just astounding with my mam, me and Joe. Anything that I can do to say thank you to those nurses, doesn't even scratch the surface of how thankful I am.
