Story

Why?

I am doing this because a relation of mine developed Sepsis
following an operation. It was not only the patient who suffered (and fortunately survived), but the whole family, which was deeply affected.

Personally I found everything emotionally, practically and physically
overwhelming and I turned to the Sepsis Trust to help me through the ordeal.
Now, as part of my journey, I want to help spread the word about how sepsis can be prevented and provide better support for sepsis survivors and their families.

I decided to walk the Great Wall of China because I wanted
to do something that would not be easy and to make a statement about the global importance of Sepsis.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the
body's response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. Around 30 million people worldwide develop Sepsis each year. Some recover, but many are not so lucky. Sepsis is one of the biggest influencer’s of maternal death and globally kills around 35,000 women each year during pregnancy, childbirth, post-partum or post-abortion. In England alone, sepsis kills around 37,000 people every year.

What I am fundraising for?

  • Help to end preventable deaths from Sepsis.
  • Improve outcomes for survivors by instigating
political change, educating healthcare professionals, raising public awareness
and providing support for those affected by this devastating condition.
  • Support for family members and those indirectly
    affected by the condition.
  • Protect people by enabling the prevention of
severe infection and the treatment of Sepsis, whist helping to ensure
    antibiotics are used responsibly.

Your donations will go directly to the Sepsis Trust, and I
will be updating this page regularly with other offline fundraising activities I am doing.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
