Story
Me and my mum are running this Sunday's Wigan 10k and raising money for the organising charity Joining Jack in memory of my brother Anthony - on what would have been his 19th birthday.
Anthony was a huge Wigan Warriors fan and also played for Hindley ARLFC under 16’s and Joining Jack was his favourite charity.
He was only 16 when he took his own life, he had been suffering with mental health issues after losing his grandma in December 2014.
All the donations made in memory of Anthony - a terrific £999 which was Anthony's date of birth - were donated to Joining Jack.
My mum has already spoken with the 10k team who has shared our story. She told them that we as a family want to promote teenage mental health and let all teenagers know that it is OK not to be Ok and it is OK to talk.
Please help us celebrate Anthony's 19th birthday by donating to Anthony's favourite charity Joining Jack.
Joining Jack - DUCHENNE Muscular Dystrophy is one of the most common fatal genetic disorders to affect children around the world. Approximately one in every 3,500 boys worldwide is afflicted with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with 20,000 new cases reported each year in the developed world. It is a devastating and currently incurable muscle-wasting disease, associated with specific inborn errors in the gene that codes for dystrophin, a protein that plays a key structural role in muscle fibre function. Symptoms usually appear in male children before the age of five. By age 10, braces may be required for walking, and most patients are confined to a wheelchair by age 12.Eventually, this progresses to complete paralysis and increasing difficulty in breathing, requiring ventilation. The condition is terminal, and death usually occurs before the age of 30.
