We raise funds through membership subscriptions, donations, legacies and a Friends Hospital Shop and Trolley Service in order to provide equipment and facilities for the benefit of patients, their families, and hospital staff.

Story

I'm a student nursing associate on the acute assessment unit at West Suffolk Hospital, and I'm running a trail marathon to fundraise for a desperately needed bladder scanner for the unit.

We frequently need to scan patients on the unit. As staff, we find ourselves spending vital time tracking down a scanner from around the hospital, rather than at the patient’s bedside delivering care. A bladder scanner is a vital piece of equipment for our unit.

Having our own bladder scanner on the unit will speed up treatment and allow us to spend more time on patient care.

We need a bladder scan to:
•    To assess for urinary retention.
•    Suspected voiding dysfunction.
•    Recurrent urinary tract infection.
•    To monitor residual urine in patients with neurological conditions.
•    To assess the ability to void following a trial without catheter.
•    To confirm catheter blockage.

The acute assessment unit (AAU) is a dedicated facility for assessing and the initial treatment of patients that have a clinical emergency.
