Chordoma UK was established in 2013 as a special fundraising initiative incorporated into UCL Cancer Institute Research Trust. Chordoma is a rare, relentless and difficult to treat bone cancer that occurs in the head and spine in people of all ages regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation. During 2017 Chordoma UK became an independent UK registered charity and exists to (a) promote and provide financial support to encourage primary and peripheral research projects into chordoma and research projects that might benefit the understanding of, and treatments, therapies, and cures for, chordoma being undertaken at bona-fide research establishments within the United Kingdom and elsewhere. (b) provide patient support services and other support resources for chordoma sufferers and those connected with or related to chordoma sufferers (c) promote awareness into chordoma within the patient, healthcare, and clinician communities. (e) support individuals and organisations whose aim is to raise funds for Chordoma UK and (f) provide financial assistance for other charities or bodies as are in any way concerned with research into chordoma and other related cancers or with the furtherance of awareness of chordoma.

Story

So ONE day until the main event !.. a 5k swim in the River Adur.

Like many other crazy people during covid I coldwater dipped throughout winter for the first time with a lovely bunch of sea bobbing females and then set my sights on some sort of challenge having overcome the cold water... "yes I'll sign up for a 5k swim in the River!". In April I started having open water swim coaching, firstly to get my head underwater and then I was taught front crawl.  Since then I've been practicing in the sea mostly. This event has come around quickly and I'm feeling rather nervous but excited.

I've just realised I nearly missed an opportunity to raise money for a very special charity close to my family - Chordoma Uk.

They fund the research into finding a cure for a really rare (1 person in 800,000) life threatening type of cancerous bone tumour that can occur at any part of the spine or skull.

My mum was diagnosed in 2014 with this very rare brain tumour called Chordoma. It's difficult to diagnose and difficult to treat.

Chordoma Uk is a charity. Money that is donated to them goes directly into research at the University College London. We were invited there in January 2020 to meet other people living with Chordoma and we were also shown the labs where the scientists were testing drugs against the cancer cells. We saw this being carried out first hand! This type of research is only happening because of Chordoma Uk and they are making progress with their research.

My mum has undergone very difficult surgery and proton beam treatment. We are extremley fortunate to have mum with us. She is an inspiration and we are so proud of her. Mum attends regular check ups and has made a remarkable recovery returning to her regular dancing groups and enjoying life.

She is in the process of writing her story and this will be uploaded onto Chordoma Uk to help other people like her.
