Hearing Dogs For Deaf People - Newfoundland Dog Rescue · 3 July 2010 ·

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds such as the smoke alarm, alarm clock, intruder alarms and baby monitors. These amazing dogs also help deaf people to leave loneliness behind by providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have just received a letter saying 'CONGRATULATIONS on securing your chance to be rescued by a Newfoundland Dog to raise money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.....'

Oh gees what have I signed up to.....the idea is that I launch myself off a boat into a freezing dark lake, just as the English summer takes hold and a freezing gale is whistling across the lake, the rain lashes down and mini waves splosh in my face and just as pneumonia begins to set in providing el doggo has had its Weetabix a massive great 60kg of Newfoundland will come to my rescue and take me to findnewland!

Anyway I have just googled 'UK lake water temps' and it’s not going to be warm but I did helpfully find some tips that I will try to remember as my teeth are chattering and I look like a plucked chicken with goose bumps about to launch myself in!!!

TIPS ON IMMERSION

TAKE THE PLUNGE! Much of the acclimatisation process is mental - knowing the moment of immersion will feel cold, and embracing it anyway. (of course its MENTAL...mental to even contemplate it)

EXHALE AS YOU JUMP IN. In cold water the ribcage contracts, which leads many swimmers to feeling they can't breath. Exhale and the next breath will come naturally in. Shrieking, grunting and fwaw-fwaw-fwawing for your first strokes are perfectly natural accompaniments to a wild swim. (That will be me then fwaw-fwaw-fwawing!)

It’s not going to be pretty!

So what I am trying to get at is I know it aint no marathon or test of endurance, perseverance or pushing human limits but it’s going to be cold – and I HATE the cold (Plus what does the dog bite on to?) but it would be awfully kind of you if would sponsor me an itsy bitsy teeny weeny little bit of dosh to make this unpleasant experience worthwhile!

Thank you
Charlotte
