We raise awareness and funds to combat the causes of homelessness

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This May, our team of 15 trekkers will be walking from Kathmandu to the village of Thangpalkot1 in Nepal to raise money and awareness for the people who were affected by the earthquakes which struck in April 2015.

I am supporting Maili Tamang, an 80-year-old widow who has been living in a temporary shack for the last three years. Her home is dark, unstable and full of cracks and holes which makes it damp and cold for every monsoon season and winter.

Each house costs just £1,800 to build. This pays for the building supplies and truck to transport the materials from Nepal's capital, Kathmandu to the village. Once the supplies are at the village, volunteers and fellow villagers spend the next 3-4 weeks building the house.

If we are lucky, Maili will have a brand new house by July 2018 and won't have to endure any more monsoons or winters in her shack.

Thank you for your support! I will have plenty of updates on Maili when I visit the village in May.

About the charity

The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 300 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities.
