Grace’s story.

Shortly after birth Grace was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) - a genetic bone condition affecting around 1 in 15,000 people. OI or ‘brittle bones disease’ as it is commonly known is characterised by fragile bones that break more easily. Other symptoms can include hearing loss, fatigue, joint laxity, curved bones, scoliosis, blue sclerae, dentinogenesis imperfecta (brittle teeth) and short stature amongst other medical problems.

Since diagnosis Grace has been under the care of the fantastic OI team at BCH 🎈and in January 2024 Grace began receiving IV bisphosphonate infusions. The aim of this treatment is to improve bone density (less fractures 🤞🏼) and reduce pain and fatigue.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital care for approximately 100,000 children and young people from across the country every year. The work they do really is amazing and the care they provide invaluable to families like ours. This summer Grace has decided to take part in their ‘31 miles in August kids summer challenge’, so that more children like her can receive their incredible care.
