It's bewildering and unsettling for anyone going into hospital but especially for children and that is why we are a fundraising hospital. We raise funds to enhance the experience of our patients by providing state of the art medical equipment and facilities and creating a child-friendly environment.

Story

C.H.A.R.M.S. (Childrens Hand and Arm Surgery) is established as a charity to raise money for the Birmingham Childrens Hand and Upper Limb Service @ Birmingham Childrens Hospital.

We are constantly trying to improve the holistic experience for the 150 children and their families who visit our Outpatients Department each week with hand injuries, congenital deformities and general hand conditions

C.H.A.R.M.S was established in 2011 to provide holistic care for the children who attend our Childrens Hand and Upper Limb Service including:

Hand Camp. This project provides a couple of days of activities for a group of children with hand and upper limb differences. The camp allows our children from the West Midlands region to develop self-confidence, independence, improve their social interaction, self-esteem, and problem solving skills, in an enjoyable and positive 'can-do' setting.

Coffee Mornings. These are a great opportunity for children and their families to meet the Hand and Upper Limb team and other parents and children with congenital hand differences.

Activities are also arranged for the children.Dancing and Sailing opportunities

Clinical research into the techniques and outcomes of our treatment in association with other national and international academic institutions underpins the work of the hand Service. This requires huge amounts of time in collecting, storing and evaluating data. We therefore desperately need the funds to support research fellows and assistants to create and manage specific databases.

The surgery and post surgical therapy of these rare conditions require a high level of specialist expertise which is learnt through apprenticeship type teaching. Funds are needed to ensure access to other world-class units for the exchange of ideas and innovations.
