Story

On 15th February 2018 we welcomed our identical twin boys to the world, 8 weeks early. Thomas Joseph Briggs (Tommy) was born at 0.47am. Shortly before his twin brother Joseph (Joe) was born sleeping as a result of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). This was the start of a very bittersweet world for us full of unimaginable pain, sadness, worry, confusion, yet also with overwhelming love. Our little surviving twin, Tommy spent 5 very long and terrifying weeks in hospital and was looked after by the amazing doctors and nurses in Simpsons NICU at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, then by Borders General Hospital SCBU- Those weeks felt like a lifetime. Eventually our boy was well enough to come home. His journey has only just begun and we face mountainous challenges as a result of his difficult birth, but he has already shown himself to be quite the little soldier. We are so in love with our little hero and feel blessed everyday that he is with us. Whilst at NICU we met Evelyn Rodger, Diana Nurse for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS). Initially Evelyn became involved with our family whilst Tommy was still in NICU and whilst Joe remained in the Borders and has remained an invaluable support since. Part of her role as Diana Nurse is to give parents a chance to create precious lasting memories with their babies, a role which she clearly feels very passionate about, delivering training all over Scotland and further afield. Evelyn is a compassionate, kind, gentle woman who is incredibly knowledgeable in bereavement care and we feel privileged that she was there to support us in making cherished memories with Joe and with saying goodbye with no regrets. As part of the memory making process we approached Evelyn and asked if she would be able to help us take 3D casts of Joe’s feet. Evelyn was more than willing to help us in any way she could. Joe’s cast is now one of our most cherished possessions and to be able to physically touch, hold, see, something that was exactly his is so very precious and it was down to some very special people that we were lucky enough to have such an amazing gift. Joe’s foot cast now has pride of place, displayed in our home alongside the cast of his twin, Tommy. Because of the request we made, 3D casting is now a form of memory making that CHAS offer bereaved parents and this is done in Joe’s name. We couldn’t be more proud that the funds we raise for the Joe’s Toes will contribute towards the work that CHAS do in making precious lasting memories for parents who have experienced pain of losing their baby. Our little Joe has given us, and now other families, so much without even being here. He never drew breath but he has changed us forever; He has reminded us all of how precious and fragile life can be. Every day is a challenge but he has already shown us that we have a strength within us individually and as a family that can move mountains. May he always know how much he was wished for, longed for, prayed for and wanted.
