Hackney Half Marathon 2021 · 26 September 2021 ·
If you told me even just a month ago I’d be signing up for a half marathon I would have laughed a lot but here I am! Alzheimer’s society is a charity close to my heart. My Dad was diagnosed with early onset dementia when I was 19 years old, I still remember that phone call today. My Dad has a lot of very straining physical health problems, including primary progressive multiple sclerosis already, but getting this diagnosis as well was devastating. My dad has at times forgotten not only his children’s faces but his doting wife also. As much as we try to make light of his forgetfulness (like him still thinking I’m a teenager-I wish!) and meet it with humour, to see my very intelligent, proud and once fearlessly independent dad having to completely rely on my mum for everything truly breaks my heart everyday. My mum is absolutely Wonder Woman! Working in mental health I’m also met with dementia, seeing the struggles and pains other families also face can be very upsetting. I will always love you Dad and forever treasure all the amazing memories we have made together. Bring on the Hackney half!
