Virtual Marathon · 4 October 2020

We are a national charity working to transform the hopes and happiness of young people facing abuse, exploitation and neglect. We support them through their most serious life challenges and we campaign tirelessly for the big social changes that will improve the lives of those who need hope most.

Story

About the charity

Children in this country are facing multiple problems that are leaving them overwhelmed. They feel alone, unloved and don’t know where to turn. By supporting The Children’s Society, you’re helping these children get the help they urgently need. Our supporters around the country fund our services, volunteer with us, and join our campaigns to show children and young people they are on their side. Together we make a real and positive difference to the lives of children in this country. With your support we can change the lives of even more.

About the team/event

The team (A group of friends from 282 Squadron, RAF Air Cadets, who are closely affiliated with the Worshipful Company of Plaisterers) has come up with a plan to walk a route starting at the Squadron’s base in East Ham, taking in some of the City including Plaisterers Hall along the route and then ending back at 282. The team has chosen to adopt the Master Plaisterers Charity, The Children’s Society, to fundraise for as they have links to Newham, where most of the team live and work.

Michael, who is one of the participants says:
“The COVID 19 pandemic has seen us all miss out on a whole host of opportunities. For me in particular, I was due to run my first marathon this year. As the event this year cannot go ahead in its normal way, the ‘Virtual Marathon’ has been devised in which participants who have signed up can run or walk the 26.2miles and record this via an app – we’ll have until 23:59:59 to complete it.

We decided that this would be a fantastic opportunity to fundraise for the Master’s Charity, The Children’s Society. Thankfully on the day I will not be alone and will have members of 282 (East Ham) Squadron, some of whom are Liverymen and Freemen, to keep me company. Of course, social distancing will be maintained throughout and there will only be groups of 6”
