The Chiltern Centre provides bespoke, individualised care to young people with learning disabilities. It gives them opportunities to socialise, learn new skill, move towards greater independence and have fun. All the while it provides their families with a much needed break from their caring role.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Over the years I have plodded round several marathons and trekked Machu Picchu and Kilimanjaro but at the end of April I will be going right out of my comfort zone and trekking for 13 days beyond Everest base camp to conquer not just one but two 6000+ metre peaks: Lobuche East and Island Peak.  Some of you will never have heard of these two peaks (nor had I until a few months ago) but suffice it to say, they are very, very different to my normal training walks around Wokingham. The kit list involves an ice axe, climbing harness, crampons and jumars (what even are jumars?!) which tells you a lot about how far from my every day this trip is going to be!

The reason I’m pushing myself so hard is to raise funds for the Chiltern Centre who I have worked for for nearly 13 years. The
Chiltern Centre provides a sanctuary for young adults with
disabilities. A safe, calm and happy space to find joy and friendship
whilst learning and growing into confident young adults. Our users enjoy day care, overnight care or short breaks tailored to their unique and individual needs. Whether that’s quiet days doing arts, crafts, cooking or music at the Centre or days out at local attractions, trampolining, bowling, swimming, visiting the gym and much more.

The Centre is genuinely a unique and life changing provision in the local area. It gives young people with disabilities the opportunities they need to grow and develop whilst providing their families with the break they so desperately need to rest and recharge from the daily pressures of caring for their disabled young person.

Over the course of my 23 day trip I will face some huge challenges, both
mental and physical. However, each of these challenges are ones that I
have chosen for
myself. And none of them will last beyond the end of the trip. The families that use the Centre didn't sign up for the challenges that they face. And their challenges last a lifetime.  So, they will be my inspiration when it gets tough. Knowing that my own personal challenge is raising money that will help, not only to lighten the load but also to bring joy to a young person
with a disability will keep me going on the longest days.

Your support doesn’t only mean the world to me, it means the world to every
young person who enters our doors and we are all so grateful.
