The Play Team at Addenbrooke's can really help the experiences of children in hospital, making a boring, bewildering or upsetting time more bearable and less stressful. Please help replace tears with a smile by supporting Play at Addenbrooke's.

Story

Having failed to develop an injury, it looks like I'm going to have to run a marathon in a couple of weeks. To help motivate me over the last 24 miles, I wanted to help raise funds for an organisation who really helped my family.

One otherwise run of the mill Sunday afternoon, we ended up rushing to Addenbrooks a&e with my daughter Matilda, who is 3. It wasn't life threatening, but we were all upset and in a flap enough to forget even her shoes, let alone anything to comfort or distract us. Mati was in pain, bewildered and very upset. Before we had even managed to register, a kind nurse came to chat to her and gave her a small bear to cuddle. She instantly calmed. During a procedure later, a play specialist came to chat to her and played with her for a while, again calming and distracting her to the extent that she actually enjoyed the procedure and definitely enjoyed the biscuits afterwards. Chatting later to the amazing team at Addenbrooks pediatrics A&E, they told me that they really wanted the kids who arrived through their doors to look back and think of hospital as a positive place, which is some doing but which I think they really achieved with Mati, not least due to the biscuits. They receive zero funding for toys and rely completely on donations, but its such a valuable part of their work. Do support if you can.
