Story

In 2013 my best friend's Mum, Sue was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Throughout her remaining years Sue was cared for and supported by St Peter's Hospice. Sue and her daughter Rachel were provided with a carer who would pop in regularly while Sue was at home. She would help care for Sue and support Rachel in order to ease some of the stress that was on her looking after her Mum.
In Sue's final months she was in and out of the Hospice regularly. Every time Sue was in the hospice the nurses and volunteers made her feel so welcome and comfortable. Friends and relatives were welcomed to visit as regularly as possible and no request was too much.
When the nurses thought Sue was close to passing they invited Rachel and Sue's friend Gill to stay the night in one of the family rooms set up in the hospice. The hospice were happy for me to visit in the evening. I ended up staying the whole night to support Rachel. The nurses were amazing. Caring for Sue to make sure she was comfortable and supporting Rachel, myself and Gill throughout the night. They were very attentive and they always put the residents and visitors first. Throughout the night they popped in to check on Sue and to make sure we were ok, offering us food and drinks and making sure we were comfortable.
Sitting next to Sue's bed is one of the most upsetting and eye opening things I have had to experience but the St Peter's Nurses made it that little bit easier. The amount of admiration I have for the hospice and the work they do can't even be put into words. The nurses and volunteers were so selfless, attentive and empathetic. At the worse time in people's lives they were there to comfort you and make the whole experience more manageable. I can never thank them enough for what they did for Sue, Rachel and all of her friends and family.
Sue sadly passed away on 19th January 2017.
On the 13th May 2018 I'm running the Bristol 10km in memory of Sue and to raise money for St Peter's Hospice. My aim is to run it in under an hour! I'd love to raise £500 so please donate whatever you can to help me reach my target!

St Peter's Hospice is Bristol's ONLY adult hospice caring for local people with life-limiting illnesses. Our commitment is to improve the quality of life of patients while extending care and support to their families and loved ones. All of our care is provided free of charge, but it costs us around £20,000 a day to provide that care. For most of this money we rely on Gifts in Wills, donations, fundraising and our shops.
