Chris's 154km Walk for Weston Park Cancer Hospital

154km Walk for Weston Park Cancer Hospital · 19 March 2016
Hi, My name's Chris but to be honest thats not important.
What is important is the work of Weston Park hospital in Sheffield. This is who I am fundraising for.
To raise money for Weston Park I will be taking the challenge of the West Highland way, This a 154km (96 mile) walk through the Scottish highlands. The Route starts at Milngavie passes through Mugdock Country Park, follows the shores of Loch Lomond, passing Ben Lomond, through Glen Falloch and Strathfillan, crossing Rannoch Moor, past Buachaille Etive Mor to the head of Glencoe, climbing the Devil’s Staircase, descending to the Loch Leven before entering Lairigmor and Glen Nevis and finishes at Gordon Square in Fort William. This will take us roughly 5 days which will including camping in the wild of the highlands.

Weston Park is one of only 4 dedicated cancer hospital in the country. It provides cancer treatment services for patients across this entire region - Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop and Chesterfield as well as Sheffield. Increasingly treatment is being delivered in the community and local hospitals under the expertise of Weston Park Hospital specialists. The hospital's expertise resides in the range of effective radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments that are performed and patients travel from all across the country, in some cases even from abroad, in order to receive the specialist treatments and care for which Weston Park is renowned.
As home to what is arguably one of the best radiotherapy departments in the UK (and the only one in the vicinity of South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire), Weston Park Hospital is ideally equipped to handle the 6,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed annually in this region alone. On average, nearly 60,000 patient visits are received every year by the department.
An average of 50 people per day visit the hospital’s chemotherapy unit as outpatients.

Unfortunately most of us have experienced cancer in our lives, whether directly or through a loved one. I personally have watched several family members suffer the battle. It even worked its way into a hobby of mine which is the Sheffield Steelers, when the wonderful and courageous Amy Usher was fighting against it. She was a very brave person who went above and beyond and if I can achieve even a quarter of what she managed I'd class myself as proud.
The staff of Weston park and their work is vital to the fight against cancer and hopefully any money raised during this endeavour will help progress that fight. Any amount you are able to give is greatly appreciated.
