As part of our annual charity fundraising event with Greenhalgh's, we want to raise as much money as we can for this unbelievable charity so please give anything you can! Susie is going all out and completing the half marathon so please get behind her on this! Chris, Vicki and Kaydan are doing the 10k alongside roughly 70 other volunteers from Greenhalgh's all running to raise money and awareness for Group B Strep Support.
Group B Streptococcus is the UK's most common cause of life-threatening infection in new-born babies and of meningitis in babies under age 3 months. On average in the UK, at least-two babies a day develop a group B Strep infection - one baby a week dies from their GBS infection, and-one baby a week survives with long-term disabilities – physical, mental or both. Yet most group B Strep infections are preventable. Group B Strep Support informs families & health professionals about group B Strep to save tiny lives.
It is not widely known and there is no dissemination of information as a mandatory requirement from the NHS. The patrons of this Charity are seeking to reverse this deficiency with immediate effect. Our major target therefore is to increase awareness of the disease and the risks that it poses and to eventually convince the Government that there should be mandatory screening for pregnant woman at appropriate stage(s).
Unfortunately England’s rate of Group B Strep Infection in babies rose by 77% between 1996 and 2020. Many other countries have introduced routine antenatal screening for GBS but the UK does not yet have such procedures in place. All the more alarming in that most Group B Strep infections in babies are preventable.
Please give what you can to help us and Greenhalgh's raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity!
Thank you
