Story

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving Page

Many of you will know that I am a Trustee of NORFOX, a small charity that raises funds for children who need help in the North West of England. So far, we have raised £312,000 since we began. The Trustees all give their time and effort free to ensure every penny raised goes directly to help the kids.

This year, like every other charity we have been hit badly by the Covid pandemic and sadly we have lost our main fundraising event this Christmas.

But that isn't stopping us and we are instead doing some creative fundraising on a personal and group level.

My contribution is to take on the 'Everesting Challenge' and climb the height of Mount Everest on my bike on 5th December. No Sherpas needed, just my trusty 'smart' turbo trainer and the Zwift cycling platform. The smart trainer fully simulates the gradient of the road and unfortunately also takes my weight into account for the resistance applied!

The Everesting Challenge requires me to

  • Carry out a single ride with a minimum of 8.848m of ascent, representing climbing up Everest from sea level.
  • Crunch through almost 220km of pedalling
  • Only get off the bike to eat, change clothes and take 'natural' breaks - no lying down or sleep is permitted.

The challenge will take somewhere between 15 to 17 hours to complete........ it's going to be a LONG day.

I will be taking the Alpe du Zwift route, a perfect simulation of Alpe d'Hues, the 'blue ribband' climb from the Tour de France. Every hairpin bend and gradient is fully replicated. The route climbs 1,036m so I have to ride it almost 9 times consecutively! I have ridden the real Alpe d'Huez and have to say that the Zwift version hurts a lot more!

In training rides, each ascent takes just over 1,000 calories of effort, the full ride will be over 9,000 calories............ the average calories used by a man running a marathon is around 3,500 calories which gives some idea of the huge challenge I'm undertaking. This will be by far the most difficult physical challenge I have ever attempted.

Please sponsor me so that I can take the pain and NORFOX will gain! Every penny we raise goes direct to our charities to help to give many underprivileged kids a better life.

Many thanks from me and all the NORFOX Trustees.
