EB (or Epidermolysis Bullosa) is an inherited condition where people don't make one or more of the proteins that bind your skin and other tissues together. People with EB therefore have incredibly fragile body tissues. Their skin can blister and ulcerate at the slightest rubbing or trauma. It's been described as 'the worst disease you've never heard of'. I work with people suffering from EB and they are amazing. What they have to put up with on a day-to-day basis is incredible. The blisters I get doing events like this are nothing in comparison to what they have to endure every day of their lives. The charity dEBra (dystrophic EB research association) supports people of all ages with EB and are just fantastic. The work they do in trying to improve the lives of people with EB is brilliant. 2 years ago I completed my '3 for EB' challenge for dEBra where I ran the Manchester, Brighton and London marathons over 3 successive Sundays. This year I'm upping the ante and have entered the UK Ironman event. For those that don't know an Ironman is; it's a long distance triathlon. It comprises of the standard 3 triathlon disciplines of Swim-Bike-Run but all somewhat longer than usual!! - a 2.4 mile lake swim, a 112 mile cycle and finally a full 26.2 mile marathon run. All of this has to be completed inside 17 hours!
I've been training all year as the cycling and swimming are relatively new for me. It's been a steep learning curve to put it mildly! But hey-ho, here we go! I'd be really chuffed if you are able to sponsor me. Every penny goes to dEBra. So thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
