EVERY 90 SECONDS someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury (ABI). There are many possible causes, such as a fall, a road traffic accident, an assault, a tumour or a stroke. A brain injury can happen to anyone, at any time. When it does, we're here to help

Story

I have ridiculously signed up to do a middle distance triathlon, aka a Half Ironman 70.3….and I am doing it in aid of the charity, Headway.

After my accident 8.5 years ago, once all the dust had settled and we knew more about my injuries, I was urged to go to my local Headway group.

As I now say ‘yes’ to as many opportunities as I can, I went for 5-6 weeks. The group had all kinds of very strong people there, all ages and all kinds of brain injuries. To add to that they all had different types of chaperones, from husbands, wives, sons, daughters and carers.

To be honest, I felt like a complete fraud!

Talking with people there, it made me understand everyone’s different circumstances, injuries and challenges. Whilst perhaps my accident was one of the more severe ones, I felt lucky that my lasting injuries still gave me my independence.

Sitting there on my own, whilst others were chaperoned by their husbands or wives, children or carer made me realise how lucky I truly am.

I have never counted myself as unlucky from the accident, or asked the question ‘why me?’.
I genuinely count myself as lucky, I shouldn’t be here. Lottie shouldn’t have her Daddy and Orla wouldn’t be here now. Something happened that night to keep me here, most likely me being stubborn and refusing to go.

I know one thing for sure, I’m all out of lives, I used all 9 in one go.

Whilst I stopped going to the group, I know all about the positive support they provide so this is my way of giving back to this wonderful charity.

A charity that deals with injuries people have obtained within their brain and the long lasting effects of the neurological side of damage to the brain.

I know it’s a rubbish time to sponsor people but the start line is on May 15th. Any support would be much appreciated!

I’ll be posting about the training and what I’m up to as Headway have asked if I can keep them up to date with what’s going on for their website and blog.

With the right goal, the right amount of desire and a smidge of obsession, anything is possible.

Thanks for reading yet another story.
