Story

OK. So I promised no more Lycra
I even promised myself no more fundraising.
I was humbled this year to raise almost £8.5k for Weston Park Cancer Charity racing The Blenheim Palace Triathlon.

Whilst “off guard” last week (on holiday, drinking beer with the family) I dropped a note to the team behind Round Table Children's Wish - they had spare places for TCS London Marathon which would not be able to be rolled over to next year and the closing date was looming.
I’m rubbish at running. I hate it.
I can’t see how I could raise any money at all. Or get around the distance.
In 6 weeks.

My last and “lifetime longest run” was 8ish years ago and was a half - I walked to the end and said loudly that I would never, ever run further than 10km again. For good measure I did not run again for 7.5ish years at all.

Did I mention I hate running?
Marlow Round Table was an amazing part of my life until I aged out - I’m still close friends with many of the people I met there and still support their great work. The charity support requests for the kids were the ones that always touched me the deepest. Simple requests. Massive impacts.

The team at #RTCW suggested I man up and step up (I’m paraphrasing - they are amazing, supportive and the work that they do will make you cry).

So here I am. An idiot that is too old and too slow and can’t do anywhere close to the distance currently. Doing something I had mentally considered and then written off several times.

In 6 weeks I’ll be in London. With some incredible athletes of all standards. Feeling like a fraud.
But between now and then I intend to train like hell. Give it my best. And at the very least get around the course.

The worlds a tough place currently. And almost everyone I know has pitched in for my last charity adventure. Even people I did not know. So anything helps. I’m not expecting to break records.

If you have any spare pennies please click the link below to the Justgiving page - the money immediately and safely goes to the charity.

Verbal abuse towards me, advice, support and suggestions are equally welcome.

And the beers you see on the table in the photo are some of the last I’ll have until after the run. And then my birthday celebrations just after the race. Maybe join me for the post race beers?
