At Asthma + Lung UK, our vision is for a world where everyone has healthy lungs. From research and campaigning to advice and support, as the UK’s lung charity we’re on a mission to change the way that lung health is perceived. Because breath is life - and that’s worth fighting for.

Story

This challenge is inspired by the New York Times bestseller - CAN'T HURT ME by David Goggins. - "Master your mind and defy the odds"

~100 DAYS OF 5Ks~

My aim for this challenge is to raise £1,000 ($1,300 for my American friends) and is based upon spreading awareness of Asthma and how serious the condition is, especially now during COVID.

My own personal reason for choosing to fundraise for Asthma UK is due to my sister, Eva being diagnosed with Asthma back in 2011. At first, her diagnosis wasn't exactly clear and was just treated as having standard Asthma. However it wasn't until 2017 when Eva was finally diagnosed with Eosinophilic Asthma, a severe form of Asthma which causes the body to produce too many Eosinophils, a type of white blood cell which causes inflammation of the airways. Had Eva been diagnosed earlier, it may have reduced the amount of serious Hospital admissions she has had and possibly avoided the necessary dose of maintenance steroids she has had to take for the last 4 years.

Asthma UK caters to all asthmatics and the funding they receive goes towards diagnostics, treatments, advice as well as multiple other things. Eva has used Asthma UK a lot in the last number of months for general advice as they are constantly updating their content in relation to COVID and how best to deal with it as an asthmatic. The information Eva has got from them has been instrumental in staying safe during these times and being aware of the dangers that COVID brings.

By completing this challenge and trying to spread awareness, I also want to highlight how serious Asthma is in general and correct the common misconception that Asthma isn't as dangerous as other conditions and is easily treated with the use of an inhaler. It is much more serious than that! The UK has some of the highest rates in Europe and on average 3 people a day die from Asthma and I believe that the more you understand the condition, the better position you’re in to work out with your healthcare team how to manage it well and learn to live with it.

Hopefully support for this great cause can help others be diagnosed and treated as early as possible!

If I can encourage anyone else to get out there and become active, thats great as well!

In the words of Goggins “I don't stop when I'm tired, I stop when I'm done.” 🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️🏃🏼‍♂️
