Hellooo friends!
I'm running The Great North Run on the 7th of September to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Why am I doing this?
- I wanted to set myself a personal challenge (probably to fill the rugby-ball shaped hole left in my life after the inability of my shoulders to stay in their sockets when tackling big lumps of men)
- Also I needed to find an activity to fill my time having finally finished my 6th year at architecture school.
- I've been running for the last few years, initially it started with an aim of saving money on commuting to/from work (you can take the boy out of Yorkshire...) Over this time I've become quite competitive with myself to beat my times over 5K and 10K but I started to plateau and get bored so I decided to set myself a new challenge ... so the new distance is now 21.0975K
Why Cancer Research UK?
I wanted to do something to support a charity that focuses on preventing and finding cures for cancer because over the years I've been deeply affected and moved by seeing the impact cancer has had on my friends and family. I'm sure many of you have had similar experiences as cancer affects 1 in 3 of us.
People I am running for:
- Last year my Grandpa was diagnosed with leukemia and sadly passed away shortly afterwards. I am running to remember him.
- I've been inspired by Livvie's (Tims new sister in law) strength and positivity throughout her treatment. Every time I've seen her she's got a great big smile across her face and is the life and soul of the party.
- Also I want to celebrate the incredible work of everyone at Cancer Research UK.
When I was at primary school dad had cancer. I was too young to really understand what was going on but I remember after one of his chemotherapy session he lost all his hair and beard and I was shocked to see he actually had a chin and lips. Thankfully his cancer was diagnosed early, was successfully operated on and treated and hasn't returned.
However unfortunately this isn't the case for everyone
40 years ago, only 1 in 4 people survived cancer. Today survival rates are higher than ever.
We now have a 2 in 4 chance of surviving cancer. but this still isn't enough. I've seen people lose their partners, mothers and fathers and the pain it causes. Cancer Research UK aims to cure 3 out of 4 people in the next ten years and needs all the support it can get.
So please support me in my run and Cancer Research UK in its mission to save lives.
Together we can beat cancer!
Love
Christopher
