Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Saturday 28th September, myself and a team of about 20 others will be tackling the North Downs 50 Challenge in support of Action for A-T.

Starting early in Farnham, Surrey, this 50km challenge will take us through the heart of the beautiful Surrey countryside, over Box Hill and hopefully across the finish line in Reigate by mid-evening. Sounds like a cracking day out doesn't it? I'm sure it will be but I also know from doing a similar event with work colleagues last year how physically hard this can be and Box Hill will seem all the more challenging after 40k!

The reason I'm doing this is that a friend of mine runs this relatively small but vitally important charity and they don't unfortunately enjoy the same level of corporate support and donations as the higher profile charities. Action for A-T are therefore reliant upon people getting out there on events like this and their friends and colleagues being generous.

What is Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T)?

A-T is a rare, neurodegenerative, inherited disease which can affect many parts of the body and cause severe disability. In about 70% of cases, A-T weakens the immune system and can lead to severe respiratory conditions. The condition first shows itself at the toddler stage with symptoms including a lack of balance, slurred speech and a more than normal number of infections. On top of severe physical disabilities, 1 in 4 children will develop cancer or severe lung disease and more than half will die before they are out of their teens.
