Chris's 1905 12 Hour Record Attempt - 148 miles on a vintage bike
Fundraising for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People
Story
In 1905 my Great Grandad, Harry Maslen set a 12 hour long distance cycling record of 148 miles whilst a member of Bath Cycling Club.
This year in a moment of madness (gin may have been involved) I thought I'd try to equal his record and to do right by Harry, I'd do it on the oldest bike I have, my vintage 3 speed Raleigh Superbe. Stripped down it weighs a measly 16KG.
This will be the furthest I've ever ridden on a bike in a day. As a triathlete endurance is the norm, however triathletes usually ride aerodynamic, lightweight bikes with 20-22 gears. I'll be sat bolt upright, on a really heavy bike with 3 gears and a bell.
I think this will be fun (!!), it will certainly be a one off challenge and a big one at that. To mark this I would like the opportunity to raise some money in the process for Rainbows Hospice for Children & Young People, the only hospice of it's type in the East Midlands.
