Chris Ward is hoping to raise £1,750 (or maybe more hopefully?) this summer by cycling 1000 miles.  Chris' charity is 1st Cuffley Scouts and he is helping to raise funds to improve/replace the huts currently being used by 1st Cuffley's Explorers, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers.

1st Cuffley Scouts have been using the main Scout Hut for nearly 50 years now and the smaller hut (which 1st Cuffley is hoping to completely replace) for 35 years.  Both are being used well beyond their 'sell-by' dates and we are planning to carry out a programme of replacement/refurbishment/repair on these huts over the coming years with the intention of starting the work this year.  Improved premises will obviously benefit our current group of children and also future generations in and around Cuffley.

1st Cuffley Scouts is a non-profit making charity; cost to families is kept to a minimum and the Leaders work very hard to promote fun, friendship and ultimately self-sufficiency in our young people whilst always upholding the aims and beliefs of the Scout Association.  In addition, our Leaders are extremely proactive in planning and organising activities for the children; improved huts and grounds would greatly facilitate this and mean that our children could benefit from even more exciting challenges in their Scouting life.

Chris was a Cub and Scout himself with 1st Cuffley and his family has been very heavily involved with Scouting in Cuffley for over 30 years.  He even remembers, as a child, the smaller hut being erected (which kind of ages it!).

Chris is planning to cycle 1,000 miles this Spring and Summer.  He started his challenge mid-March and hopes to complete it by the end of September; so far Chris has cycled approximately 820 miles.  Most of this will be part of his daily commute into central London.  He is plotting the miles on Google Maps 'as if' he had started at Land's End and aiming to finish in John O'Groats - a distance of 874 miles.  However, he will plot the route so that it covers 1,000 miles.

As many of you will know, a year ago Chris would have struggled to cycle 50 miles in that period so this is a big challenge for him.

What can you do to help?  You could pledge some money to the cause - a £10 donation is equivalent to 1p a mile.  Of course, you could pledge more or less - it is entirely up to you.  Anything you do will help 1st Cuffley Scouts to continue to develop Cuffley's children now and in the future.
