Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On 26 June I will be joining a small group who will be travelling to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (altitude 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet); the highest mountain in Africa and one of the largest free-standing mountains in the world.
I will be covering the cost of the trip from my own pocket thereby ensuring that every penny that I am able to raise by way of sponsorship will go to GTCC. I hope I am equal to the challenge. As the oldest member of the group I will be doing my best not to let the side down. Whilst I am reasonably fit and will be taking part in some training walks, there is nothing I can do to avoid the risk of altitude sickness which can be a serious side-effect when walking or climbing above 3,000 metres.
GTCC's recently appointed chaplain, Rod Boreham, will be seeking to build further bridges between the churches of Guildford and the wider community. His mission is to reach out to the community with the love of Christ and practical offers of support and care in an unmistakeable way that will bring a spiritual dimension to the care that is offered.
The Street Angels Programme operates with support from Surrey Police and the Safer Guildford Partnership. Over 80 volunteers from a wide range of churches take turns on Friday and Saturday nights (10.00pm to 4.00am) to serve with compassion those who throng the bars, clubs and streets of Guildford, whatever their need.
During its first year of service Guildford Street Angels made contact with 6,000 people and assisted in various situations ranging from calling ambulances and seeing people to safety, offering a listening ear to people in emotional distress, waiting with vulnerable people until they were safely reunited with friends or family, helping people to taxis and intervening in situations where vulnerable people could otherwise come to harm. To find out more about the work of GTCC and its significant contribution to the reduction of street crime in Guildford please do log on to its website www.gtcc.org.uk.
