The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

I'm Chris Mitchell, and I am diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. Raising public awareness of Asperger's Syndrome through giving talks and workshops is something that I have dedicated much of my spare time to. I have created this page to raise funds for the National Autistic Society, which has supported much of my work, as well as in memory of a good friend whom I lost earlier this year.

In April 2009, I am undertaking a challenge that will test me both physically and socially - I will be trekking to Everest Base Camp. As a person with Asperger's Syndrome, this will present some social challenges such as sharing accommodation with strangers as well as tackling extreme environments (e.g. altitude). As well as a challenge, it is also for me, a pilgrimage, being a practicing Buddhist.

The ultimate reason though why I am undertaking this trek is to dedicate it to the memory of a close friend, also diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, who sadly committed suicide early in 2008, Genevieve Edmonds. Genevieve did so much for the Asperger community through her work with Paradigm and the ASPECT Group at Sheffield Hallam University, as well as publishing numerous books on the subject. It is important that her inspiration lives on. Genevieve had an affinity with nature but sadly missed out on many adventures due to high level anxiety.

I would like any funds raised from this trek to go to the National Autistic Society as it is a cause that Genevieve could have made a great contribution to, and I am sure that she would have been pleased with the direction that the 'I Exist' campaign for better services for adults with autism is moving in. Rest in peace Genevieve.
